Record numbers expected to travel through Ireland West Airport Knock this August bank holiday weekend

Over 15,000 passengers are expected to pass through Ireland West Airport Knock this August bank holiday weekend, a 20% increase on the same period last year providing a major boost for numbers travelling to the West & North West, on whats expected to be the busiest August bank holiday weekend in the airports history.

Almost 100 flights will arrive and depart over the weekend to and from 15 different destinations as the busiest month of the year commences. Key festivals taking place in the West this week such as the Galway Races and the new Wild Atlantic Way driving route have provided a significant boost to the numbers using the airport.

The major increase in passenger numbers is also attributed to a host of new services which have been launched from the airport in 2014 with strong numbers travelling on new services to and from Eindhoven in the Netherlands, Kaunas in Lithuania and Glasgow with Ryanair whilst a new service from Cologne-Bonn in Germany with Germanwings has proved very popular with an expected 10% increase in the number of German visitors to the West this weekend. This combined with an additional 50,000 new seats added on key London services to London Stansted and London Luton this year has contributed to record levels of growth in 2014 at Ireland West Airport Knock.

Ireland West Airport, Managing Director, Joe Gilmore added ““This weekend is expected to the busiest August bank holiday in the airports history with very strong numbers expected on our services to and from the UK and Europe.  We are expecting an extra 5,000 passengers to use the airport this weekend compared to the same weekend last year. What has been particularly noticeable from recent passenger research is the additional traffic from overseas markets visiting the West to experience the Wild Atlantic Way,  Our airport is the central gateway to 8 of the 15 official Wild Atlantic Way Signature Discovery Points and offers the perfect gateway for overseas visitors to discover this beautiful scenic route and it has been very welcoming to see the increased traffic through the airport as a result’

Passengers travelling from the airport this weekend should plan to arrive at the airport at least 90 minutes before their flight departure time irrespective of whether they are checking in on the web or at the airport.
