Ireland West Airport today welcomes the announcement that funding to the amount of €5,761,738 from the Department of Transport, Tourism & Sport has been approved. Capital expenditure (CAPEX) of €4,772,252 and PPR-C (Public Policy Remit-Capital) of €989,486.The funding is provided to support critical Safety and Security Projects under the Regional Airports Programme 2015-2019. The Programme provides for Exchequer support for phase 1 of critical safety and security projects to be carried out at the airport in 2019.
The main body of funding of €4.7m is to support the current rehabilitation of the airports 2,400 metre runway which commenced in May 2019. The airport will also invest close to €3 million in completing the project in addition to the exchequer funding. The overlay, which includes a complete resurfacing and the installation of new ground lighting systems is required to ensure that the runway continues to meet the strict regulations governing the operation and specification of runways at major airports.
Arthur French, Chairman, Ireland West Airport said ‘We welcome today’s announcement of phase 1 of funding by the Minister for Transport, Tourism, and Sport, Shane Ross, TD which will assist the airport in undertaking important safety and security related projects including the completion of the rehabilitation and overlay of the airport’s 2,400 metre runway, upgrading of Hold Baggage Screening equipment, Fire service training Simulator and training ground upgrade and upgrades of airport service vehicles. We also wish to acknowledge in particular the continued unwavering support of Minister Michael Ring, Minister for Rural & Community Development for the airport. We look forward to continuing to work closely with Minister Ross, his Department and with regional and local government representatives and our local authority partners and stakeholders in driving to implement the objectives set out as part of the 10-year National Development Plan and Project Ireland 2040.
